Bala

When we started making this part of our website in April, the situation was as in these pictures about Lakshmi and Bala. They would go around together, Bala being the first-born to Lakshmi following her anywhere.

However, in May situation changed as Lakshmi gave birth to Damini, our latest addition. Henceforth, Bala has been mostly hanging our with his "co-brother" Amavasya. They are both young bulls with good and calm nature. Not the oldest, not the biggest, not the strongest, and not the youngest either.

It is hard to actually tell any flamboyant stories of Bala, as he is always so cooperative, cool and easy-going. Of course, he too has a tale to tell from the earlier days. Before setting a proper fencing to separate our cows from the rest of the land with temple structures, day-care center etc. we used to have a make-shift fencing from net and bamboo poles. Now, for some reason the older cows had learned that one can't go through fences (barbed wire) and they obediently left the fence alone.

It was Bala (and Amavasya) who did not know, that one can't break fences. Hence, one fine day, these two fellows put their heads and horns under the fencing net and liften them up... that was the end of the fence. Ever since that day, they would cross the fence, sometimes even plainly running through it. This lead to an ubelievable amount of stress for the writer, who tried to keep the cows from eating young mango trees and other stuff just planted.

Even more striking in this game was, that the older cows somehow didn't manage to figure this out. Sometimes they would try and get entangled with the net, but these two would just come and go, as if it was their private curtain of 150 feet wide.

As an afterword let it be said that mangoes are doing well and the little boys actually made a huge favor by grazing mostly the weeds and grass around the trees.

Hopefully we can provide enough of care and food for Bala to perform something similar in future as well. You can help us do that at:

Lakshmi and Damini

Lakshmi came to us as a one-year old lady without a mother. Despite some care-takers warning about her nature and asking never letting her behind your back, we quite fast developed a comfort zone with her.

She never did too many tricks and after having Bala, she was always well-behaved, easy to milk, and true to her name, an abundant giver.

Bala being a young bull in a herd with 7 of them found always a haven by her mother's side. As the pictures prove, the son was often glued to the side of his mother.

This however changed drastically on the 29th April 2022, when Damini was born. She was named like that after Shani's (Saturn) second wife to honor the transition of Shani to it's house that day. With Damini's arrival something changed in our Lakshmi, too. She is still worth her name and doesn't give any trouble, but try and go close to her dear calf Damini and you will take a few quick paces to avoid her anger. Lakshmi has taken on herself a very protective role of a mother now.

You can help us keep her (and Damini) well fed at:
